Piglet production in Latin America is the target segment of a new European feed ingredient alliance.

Dutch company, Nukamel, which specializes in feed products for young animals in piglets, calves, poultry and aqua, said it has signed a deal with Spain’s Alternative Swine Nutrition (ASN) to develop and sell products based on dairy ingredients for piglets in that region.

The partnership with enable a sharing of formulation expertise around the use of dairy products in the diets of today’s highly prolific sows, as well as in starter feeds, said the two companies.

As young piglets are sensitive to stress and infections, supporting their health will lead to a reduced number of veterinary treatments and improved growth, they added.

The Nukamel sales organization, Nutrimel, in Santiago, Chile and Sunrise in Sao Paulo, Brazil will launch the products from the aligned companies on the market, supported by both companies.

Latin American foothold

The Dutch producer has has a strong foothold in Latin America in terms of feed ingredients for calves.

“Chile and Brazil have, for many years, been key countries for Nukamel; actually we started [business] in Chile over 30 years ago, [and we have] a significant market share in dairy products [in that market] today.

“In general, the [Latin American livestock] market, as all markets, has it up and downs but Nukamel is committed to these markets for the long term and has been able to grow over the years,” Jan Druyts, managing director of Nukamel, told us.

The company attended the Atlanta based trade show, IPPE, for the first time in 2015, with the objective of targeting the Brazilian broiler segment with its nutritional emulsifier product, Volamel Extra.

Nukamel, with manufacturing plants in Belgium and the Netherlands, specializes in feed products for young animals including piglets, calves, poultry. It also sells to the aquaculture segment.

The company produces milk replacers and dairy feed ingredients for piglets to help them “overcome pre-weaning deficiencies in sow's milk and post-weaning transition problems to dry feed, especially in case of early weaning.”

Meanwhile, Simon Tibble, research and innovation director at ASN, said understanding and applying the benefits of the bioactive components in dairy products is fundamental to the Spanish company’s R&D approach.

Construction is underway on a new ASN creep feed facility in Spain, which is forecast to be the largest in Europe, on completion. It has projected capacity of 80,000MT - Druyts said the plant would benefit the collaborative effort between the two companies.
