Dutch group, Barentz, says its animal nutrition portfolio has been strengthened through the acquisition of the majority shares in feed additives trader and distributor, Globe Ingredients.

That business sources vitamins, amino acids, proteins and minerals from suppliers worldwide, then stores and distributes them from the Netherlands.

Barentz, which is privately owned and based in Hoofddorp, said the move will also expand its footprint globally, with Globe Ingredients having a presence in Serbia, China and Colombia.

While mainly focused on the feed industry, Globe Ingredients also sells to the food and pharma sectors. The current directors of that distribution firm are set to remain stakeholders and managers of the company.

Barentz, which is still privately owned, has forecast turnover for the group of €1bn this year. It said it still has an eye on the European market but said the business is growing rapidly in the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific regions. In February, it announced a joint venture in food and animal nutrition ingredients distribution in Iran.

Consolidation

Acquisition has proved critical to long term growth prospects for ingredients distribution players as the market has consolidated hugely in the past decade.

And Barentz has not been shy when it comes to asset building - acquiring Vitablend, Agri Nutrition, Forum Products and Maustepalvelu in the past few years.

“Ingredients distributors who want to continue to be relevant are urged to increase their geographical reach and expand their product portfolio in order to achieve critical mass and realize economies of scale,” Hidde van der Wal, Barentz CEO, told us last year.

Protein sources

Barentz has also been exploring the potential of insect and bacterial derived protein meal sources, as well as focusing on innovation in the yeast and amino acid segments.

In April this year, it announced a deal whereby it would be the exclusive worldwide distributor of a lentin-based plant protein ingredient from Parabel USA, Inc. Lentein protein, which can be used in food and feed, is derived from Lemnoideae, a water lentil.

Lemnoideae can be harvested every day and doubles its biomass in 24 to 36 hours, said Barentz. It is non GMO and is said to contain a typical plant protein fiber and amino acid profile.
