Energy efficiency was the buzzword at feed technology show VICTAM 2015

From coolers to pellet presses to extruders, increased capacity with reduced energy consumption was the cry of many feed technology providers at VICTAM 2015 in Germany last week.

FeedNavigator spoke to a raft of companies launching NPD at the show.

Stefan Hoh, product manager feed at Bühler, told us the manufacturer’s pellet cooler, the aptly named Coolex, has higher energy efficiency than conventional coolers.

He said the machine’s uniform cooling action enables the moisture content variance to be reduced to about half the value of competitors’ coolers, allowing “producers to stretch their margins”.

The adjustability of the continuous product discharge rate ensures optimal throughputs and retention times, said Hoh.

Coccidiostats dosing

Frank Dielissen, managing director of IVS Dosing Technology, said its POWLI was originally designed for a drug company for its instant enzyme production needs. Now it is being rolled out for use in the feed sector.

The equipment is for dosing dry micro-components into a liquid. He said it allows for very accurate dosing. “It can be used to dose coccidiostats, for example, directly onto a coater avoiding the cleaning and flushing steps required when using a mixer. This way there is no waste,” he said.

He said, potentially, the unit can be used with a range of other additives from granulates to flavorings to probiotics.

New feed mill

UK mill manufacturers, Christy Turner, re-engineered its ER & F Turner 600 Flaking Mill, already used by breakfast cereal producers, for the animal feed market. The firm launched it at the Cologne event last week.

“We have simplified the proven chassis and roll design of the mill to meet the needs of feed producers in terms of capacity and price,” said Chris Jones, managing director of the technology provider.

The mill is designed to handle steam flaked, micronized and extruded grains, maize, wheat, barley, beans, peas and soy.

Georges Hallary, VP of sales and marketing at French processing equipment producer, Clextral, was at VICTAM to highlight, for the first time, the benefits of its Evolum+ extruder line for the feed sector.

The redesigned machine builds on the Evolum twin screw extruder technology, he said, to give feed producers, new levels of throughput and temperature control.

Grinding innovation

Dutch pelleting, flaking and grinding technology firm, CPM, launched a new hammer mill at the German trade show.

Paul Alderliefste, area manager, EMEA, told us it offers between 20 and 30% greater energy efficiency compared to traditional grinding systems. “We achieved this by having a slower rotational speed, and increased the number of hammers so as not to impact grinding specifications.”

Proven pellet press gains

Willem de Vaan, director of Wynveen International and the Triott Group, which encompasses a range of technology firms, explained how the new, PTN developed, pellet press - the Superroll - has been validated by the International Research Association of Feed Technology (IFF) to provide 30% more capacity and 30% energy savings when compared to conventional presses.

We also caught up with Swiss company, Agromatic. It was launching its new modular temperature monitoring system for silos, grains and storage at VICTAM.  “You can combine digital or wireless sensors with an existing analogue system, for example, without changing your software,” said Daniel Kreissel, sales manager at the Zurich headquartered firm.
